From Nha Trang north to Danang and from Hue to Hanoi we took sleeper trains. There are no private compartments and we shared our nights with quiet strangers. Of course they had to share with foreigners but we tried to be compatible as well. We enjoyed views of farms and villages out the windows. From Hoi An to Hue we took a car through Hai Van Pass – A winding mountain road with hairpin turns, switchbacks and no guardrails on the cliff edges – fortunately the driver took it slowly and carefully – giving us several stops to admire the views.
